the esmeraude of the heavenly garden
I am alive. I am working on living, as opposed to being alive, as the difference lies in the storm you choose to drown in and the floating device you toss away. I chose recklessly, you see, and I am paying the price for what must have been chosen and should have been discarded. It is a line. There is no measure of its width beyond what the mind conjures, but the line exists and persists all the same. The eye knows better. A pair of eyes knows nothing. It comes in a set of three, but only one remains standing. Alas, I am alive — barely living, but working on it as if time is merely a construct of fools trying to row, row, row this boat as gently as they could to avoid drowning in the chosen storm. This is what we chose, what I have chosen. This is mine.

CHAPTER XI
The Golden Night of Rebirth
Without a doubt, the coral anniversary of the current patriarch and matriarch of Lesjardins was a mark of the new century for two global powerhouses. The august atmosphere of the celebration was felt by the exclusive attendees, who were personally invited by Madame Lesjardins (née Versailles, though not to be confused with the famed palace) herself. The festivities are one for the melting pot of cultures, nationalities and various walks of life. In a way, it is a commemoration of a union that birthed a new era. Just three years ago in 2018, the former patriarch of the family Antoine Lesjardins passed away peacefully in his sleep at ninety-nine years old, leaving the Lesjardins in the trusted hands of its fourteenth generation.Bertrand Lesjardins, the current chairman of the board of directors of the horticulture empire, addressed the family’s humble beginnings as caretakers to the gardens of French aristocrats in his welcoming speech.“We have built the grounds with love and respect, with sincerity and honesty. We uphold our family values in the very air we breathe and the ground we touch,” Bertrand narrated, with the family garden illuminated to showcase the opulent estate in its true beauty. (It was reconstructed twenty-odd years ago to resemble the fairytale fantasy his eldest daughter Larissa had demanded of him for her fifth birthday, he later shared.)Indeed, the founding of what has become a multi-generational legacy started with intimate love and passion for natural beauty. The Lesjardins Holdings have now expanded into various aspects of horticulture, including production, conception, cultivation and trade of crops, fruits and flora. However, the everlasting Lesjardins mark has always been in the most elegant gardens, leaving its eternal glory in the creation of the world-renowned Monet Garden, Keukenhof and Villa d’Este to name a few in West Europe alone.Perhaps the union between Monsieur Lesjardins and Madame Versailles was stars aligned in itself as well. As the eldest granddaughter of the current mining conglomerate group Beaumont Minings Inc., it is only apt for Madame Carla Versailles-Lesjardins to be adorned in her illustrious, bespoke jewellery set referred by jewellery enthusiasts as ‘The Carnelia’.The unique, one-of-its-kind jewellery set was said to be a tradition to celebrate the birth of women of Versailles lineage. Each set is custom-designed by the best of jewellery makers with a chosen gemstone mined and processed by Beaumont Minings themselves. The jewellery line, dubbed as ‘The Florents’ series, has gathered a cult following of jewellery makers and enthusiasts alike for their delicate design and its brilliantly cut gemstones. The amber topaz on The Carnelia is paired with the Zuhair Murad couture in a deep, velvetine navy. The talk of the night (and every social event that was worth attending) was indeed the grand presence of Beaumont jewels in the celebration. The parent company (now the epicentre of five different mining sectors including energy, metal and mineral, resources, oil and precious stones) was established in the wake of the 19th-century mining boom. With its range and diversity in the mining sector, Beaumont Minings have dominated the industry from the background. However, for the night, Madame Carla has proven that her namesake still has a significant hold as the source of the finest gemstones in the globe. The clients of the world-renowned quality stones include Cartier, De Beers, and Boucheron, along with private buyers from royal and reigning authorities around the world. The family has been seen on the jewelry houses’ private showings and, consequently, appointments to personal fittings with couture designers.Though the family’s attendance at the fashion week is rare, the two daughters Larissa and Morgana are always a sight to be expected and admired since they were first spotted at Givenchy in 2000 and Balmain in 2006, respectively. They were ten years old, then.Various high-scale and exclusive events have consistently invited the sisters personally, with hand-written, tailored letters no less. Whilst they were in attendance, they were rarely inclined to be documented by the press, especially the youngest Florent. Perhaps it is how the Lesjardins' gems have stayed under the radar despite their sterling, socialite-envy profiles. Their elusiveness only serves to enhance the dynasty-worthy acknowledgment that many try to covet and emulate.Larissa, adorned in her Florent white opal set ‘The Agatea’ and custom Christian Dior -- yet to be publicly released from its F/W collection next year -- is currently part of the Beaumont Minings management and her fellow Versailles cousins. The eldest of the Lesjardins’ trio was seen with her fiance as they mingled with the esteemed guests, including Tanzania’s current President and Australias' Energy and Mining state officials. A jewellery designer by trade, Larissa’s involvement in the family business also extended to her collaboration with Chaumet on the design of their signature ‘Santiago’ luxury watch line and a few pieces of Bvlgari's ‘Naturalia’ collection, both paying homage to her family values.(Read more about Larissa Lesjardins’ engagement to Aaron Cho of the South Korean electronic magnate SK Group in Chapter 8: The Ripples of the 21st Century). The legacy of the Lesjardins, it seems, will be passed on to the eldest son of the three Lesjardins siblings, Armand. The thirty-one-year-old was a studious aid to his father in his current ventures. As of 2019, he has taken over the Southeast Asian leg of the multi-billion dollar company. According to industry insiders, Armand has been heavily involved in the business for the last few years. Armand confides that he has had a vast interest in continuing the family legacy from a very young age, investing his time studying architecture and business management at top universities across the globe. Both father and son are dressed by Giorgio Armani for the night, said to be a good friend of the family.Following her older siblings’ footsteps, Morgana has been seen in various soirees and galas in her parents’ stead dressed by the most prominent names in the past few years. Tonight, she adorned her ‘Esmeraude’ emerald set with a bespoke Heaven Gaia and was seen by her parents’ side for most of the night. Her involvement in either family business has yet to be confirmed, she has been noted to be one of the young prowess to anticipate. It has been speculated that she would take the helm of the Lesjardins Holdings' landscaping venture, though the management has declined to comment. A patron of the arts with a tigress' eyes, her closest relatives describe her to be.Indeed, the Lady of the House disclosed that the event was co-curated by Morgana herself, with the Reinassance-Esque decor being the youngest’s incandescent interpretation of a golden rebirth. It is a marvelous sight to behold, with each guest in their flowing silhouette that stayed true to a vintage Parisian profile of the 1700s in the modern yet nostalgic opulent garden. The Lesjardins as a family are not well documented and printed glimpses of them in public events are very rare in-between. One must take a closer look at the prints that do make it to the world's eye view to witness their hold: elusive yet present in the crust of upper echelons of the elite (see The Gallery on Print: Lesjardins on page 339).There were no photographs allowed throughout the party, though a slew of photographers roamed around the area for the Madame's personal collection. Some of these photos, Morgana herself explained, will be auctioned for private collections for several benefits centred around ethical agriculture and education for rural farmers in sustainable farming practices.Perhaps, if it was not for the exclusivity of the party invitees itself, the coral anniversary celebration was one to be remembered for its timeless beauty. It is one of the nights seared to the mind, not unlike tales of fairy rings and whimsical symphony. True to its namesake, the Lesjardins is a gilded garden, bejewelled in resplendence and mystery.
